Fundamentals of photography/Digital camera
Its always fun to be a full time or par time photographer because we show the beauty of nature. I am going to explain about the fundamentals of digital photography/camera.
First and foremost, we need to understand the rule and techniques of photography.
The following are the key technical aspects of a camera to take a best shot.
Aperture
The function that opens or closes to let in more or less light
f/1.4 focal length / lower the no higher light enter into the cam sensor
1:4 ratio of size front opening and the distance of the lens to the sensor or focal length
smaller number : larger front open, more shallow depth of field, more light enter into cam,
Shutter Speed
The function that either blurs or freezes action. Inside your camera, directly in front of the sensor, is a small flap called the shutter. When you take a photo, this opens and closes to let light reach the sensor, creating your image. Shutter speed describes how quickly or slowly the shutter opens and closes again.
A fast shutter speed means that the shutter is only open for a short period of time; a slow shutter speed means the shutter is open for longer.
-Slow shutter speed blurs action and makes more bright
-Fast shutter speed freezes action
ISO
The function that changes the sensitivity of the camera to light.
Lower ISO - lower sensitivity to light - lower grain size - shutter opens much longer to allow more light
keep low ISO as much as possible to reduce the noise/grain size
White Balance
The function that determines the colors captured in the photo. It changes the colors of the picture.
You may set your camera with Day light, Tungsten (blue) or Florescent (purple)
Focus
The function that determines which part of the image is crisp or fuzzy. It makes your eyes moves focus on the objects.
Continuous Shooting
The function that allows photos to be taken quickly in sequence.
Lenses
Two main types
1. Wide angle lens (a lens with wide view). Eg. A human eye
2. Telephoto lens ( a lens with a narrow view and including magnification). Eg. A binoculars.
Editing Tools
Adobe Photoshop - Amazing tool but requires license to use it and costs money.
You can use some free online photo editors Eg. https://pixlr.com/editor/
Accessories
Yes..Its expensive hobby!!! Have fun and make others happy.
First and foremost, we need to understand the rule and techniques of photography.
- 180 Rule - Available space for a camera to shoot a object.
- Rule of third - A way to make your photos more visually pleasing.
- Head room / nose room - Space above the head and below the foot
- Masking - A way to visually change the "shape" of your photo.
- Leading lines - A technique to direct or entertain the eye through the use of lines within the composition.
- Lighting - To see the details in the photo. There are 3 types of lighting required for a portrait photography such as
- Key light - the key light will be the primary source of light used to illuminate your subject. The key light acts as a spotlight, taking the place of the sun or a window. Normally, it is the strongest/brightest light in your scene and, as a result, will cast the darkest shadows and have the biggest impact on the look of your scene. Place the key light between 15 to 45 degrees to one side of your subject, either left or right depending on your preference. This will ensure that one side is illuminated while the other is cast in shadow.
- Fill light - The fill light lends more light to your scene, makes your subject more visible, and softens the light emitted from the key light. This secondary light should generally be placed on the opposite side of the key light.
- Back light - The back light is placed behind your subject, illuminating it from the back. The purpose of the backlight is not to add light like the key and fill light, but rather to separate your subject from the background and lend it definition by creating a bright outline around your subject, highlighting it and giving it a 3-dimensional appearance.
